◆unless conj.

1. 表示“除非”、“如果不”，用以引導(dǎo)條件狀語從句( 注意用一般現(xiàn)在時(shí)表示將來)，通常放在主句之后，有時(shí)為了加強(qiáng)從句語氣，也可放到主句之前。如：

You will fail unless you work hard. 你若不努力就會(huì)失敗。

Unless you go at once, you will be late. 你如果不馬上去，

你就會(huì)遲到了。

注：若主、從句的主語相同，且從句謂語包含有動(dòng)詞 be, 有時(shí)可用省略形式(即省略主語和動(dòng)詞 be)。如：

I won’t go unless (I’m) invited. 除非請(qǐng)我，不然我就不去。

Unless (you are) arriving by train, please let me know. 你若不打算坐火車來，請(qǐng)告訴我一聲。

2. 由于 unless 本身已含有否定意義，因此不要受 if……not 的影響而在 unless 后誤加 not。如：

如果他不是傻瓜的話，他會(huì)這樣做的。

正：He will do it if he is not a fool.

正：He will do it unless he is a fool.

誤：He will do it unless he is not a fool.

◆until, till prep. & conj.

表示“直到(……為止)”，兩者�？蓳Q用，只是 until 比 till稍正式，所以在正式文體中，一般用 until, 而在口語或非正式文體中則兩者都可用。從其后所接成分來看，till多與名詞或較短的從句連用，而較長(zhǎng)較復(fù)雜的成分多用 until, 位于句首時(shí)也多用 until。

兩者在用法上應(yīng)注意以下幾點(diǎn)：

1. 相關(guān)主句謂語必須是持續(xù)性動(dòng)詞，若是終止性動(dòng)詞，則應(yīng)為否定式(因?yàn)榻K上性動(dòng)詞一旦被否定就成為狀態(tài)，便可持續(xù))。如：

We waited until [till] he came. 我們一直等到他來。

We didn’t leave until [till] he came. 直到他來我們才走。

2. 引導(dǎo)時(shí)間狀語從句時(shí)，其謂語要用現(xiàn)在時(shí)表示將來意義。如：

I won’t leave until he comes back tomorrow. 我要等他明天回來后再走。

3. 有時(shí)其后可跟副詞、介詞短語或從句等。如：

He has been ill until recently. 他最近一直生病。

She didn’t return until after twelve o’clock. 直到12點(diǎn)過后她才回來。

They didn’t reach the station until after the train had left. 直到火車開走之后，他們才到達(dá)車站。

Until when are you going to stay here? 你在這兒要待到什么時(shí)候?

4. 用于 not……until [till]……

(1) 若主句動(dòng)詞為終止性動(dòng)詞，其意為“直到……才……”；若主句為持續(xù)性動(dòng)詞，其意為“不到……就……”。比較：

They didn’t find her till the next day. 他們直到第二天才找到她。

He didn’t wait until I returned. 他沒等到我回來(沒等我回來他就走了)。

注：有時(shí) until 或 till 可換成 before。如：

Until [Before] you told me, I had no idea of it. 在你告訴我之前，我對(duì)此一無所知。(即直到你告訴我，我才知道)

(2) 可用于強(qiáng)調(diào)句型或倒裝句型：

強(qiáng)調(diào)句型：It is (was) not until [till]……that……

倒裝句型：Not until [till]……. do (does, did)……

他直到昨天才回來。

正：He didn’t come back till yesterday.

正：It was not till yesterday that he came back.

正：Not until yesterday did he come back.
