in the balance （決定、結果、前途等）不能確定的，尚未決定的
The future of this project is (hanging) in the balance. 這項目的下一步仍然懸而未決。

in the beginning 起初，在開始時
He disliked it in the beginning. 他開始時不喜歡它。

in the circumstances 在此情況下
