3. 用于 be supposed to, 意為“應(yīng)該”、“理應(yīng)”,其后接動(dòng)詞原形(有時(shí)為進(jìn)行式或完成式)。如: You are supposed to be there before dark. 你應(yīng)該在天黑前趕到那兒。 He’s supposed to be doing his homework at home now. 他現(xiàn)在應(yīng)該在家里做作業(yè)。 He is supposed to have written us a letter. 他本來(lái)應(yīng)該給我們寫(xiě)封信的。 注:用于否定句,有時(shí)表示委婉地禁止,意為“不應(yīng)當(dāng)”、“不可”、“不許”。如: You’re not supposed to smoke in here. 此地不準(zhǔn)吸煙。 另外請(qǐng)比較: 他們本來(lái)應(yīng)該在一小時(shí)以前趕到這兒的。 正:They were supposed to be here an hour ago. 正:They are supposed to have been here an hour ago. 4. 用來(lái)表示條件(相當(dāng)于連詞 if),意為“假設(shè)”,也可用 -ing的形式,若語(yǔ)氣不肯定,有時(shí)還可用虛擬語(yǔ)氣。試比較: 假若他不來(lái),那我們?cè)趺崔k? 正:Suppose [Supposing] he is absent, what shall we do? 正:Suppose [Supposing] he was absent, what should we do? 5. 用來(lái)表示建議,意為“……吧”、“……怎么樣”,后接從句時(shí)可用現(xiàn)在時(shí)態(tài)或過(guò)去時(shí)態(tài),相比之下用過(guò)去時(shí)語(yǔ)氣更委婉。如: Suppose we have [had] a rest. 我們休息一會(huì)兒吧。 Suppose we start [started] tomorrow. 我們明天動(dòng)身吧。 ◆sure adj. 1. 表示“一定”或“確信”,通常用作表語(yǔ)。其后可接: (1) 不定式,表示說(shuō)話人的看法,意為“一定會(huì)”。如: He’s sure to win (agree). 他一定會(huì)成功(同意)。 (2) of (doing) sth 或 that / whether從句,表示句子主語(yǔ)的信念,意為“確信”、“自信”。如: He is sure of success (winning). 他確信能成功(贏)。 I’m not sure (whether) I’ll be able to come. 我不敢肯定是否能來(lái)。 注:有時(shí)后接介詞 about。如: I’m not sure about it. 我對(duì)此沒(méi)有把握。 2. 用于 Be sure (not) to do sth. (一定要或不要做某事)。如: Be sure not to forget it. 千萬(wàn)別忘記啦。 Be sure to turn off the light when you go to bed. 上床睡覺(jué)時(shí)一定要關(guān)燈。 3. 用于 for certain, 意為“肯定地”、“確切地”等。如: No one knows for certain what happened to her. 沒(méi)有確切地知道她出了什么事。 4. 用于 make certain, 意為“弄清楚”、“弄得有把握”。如: Make sure of the time. 把時(shí)間弄清楚。 You must make sure that you have enough money. 你必須要確保有足夠的錢(qián)。 ◆surprise v. & n. 1. 用作動(dòng)詞,通常是及物動(dòng)詞,意為“使驚奇”,通常以“人”作賓語(yǔ),或用被動(dòng)形式(其實(shí)是系表結(jié)構(gòu))。如: What he said surprised everyone. 他說(shuō)的話使大家很驚奇。 I was greatly surprised to hear [at hearing] she was in prison. 聽(tīng)說(shuō)她坐牢了,我大吃一驚。 I was surprised at you (the news). 我對(duì)你的舉止(聽(tīng)到這個(gè)消息)感到吃驚。 We were surprised that he didn’t come to the party. 我們對(duì)他沒(méi)來(lái)參加晚會(huì)感到很意外。 2. 用作名詞,表示一般意義的“驚奇”、“吃驚”,是不可數(shù)名詞;表示具體意義的“使人驚奇的事或東西”,是可數(shù)名詞。如: His face showed surprise at the news. 他聽(tīng)到這個(gè)消息臉上露出吃驚的神色。 What a surprise to see you here! 真想不到在這里見(jiàn)到你!
